It's 9:40 on a Saturday night, friends have just texted that they're coming over, and the fridge is looking thin. If you're searching for a liquor store open late in St. Albert, this guide is for you. City Liquor sits right on St Albert Trail in the Inglewood area, and we're open until midnight every Friday and Saturday. Below you'll find our hours, what Alberta's rules actually allow, and a few tips for making a late run quick and painless.

Our hours at a glance

Here's when you can find us at 260-525 St Albert Trail:

DayHours
Sunday to Thursday10 AM to 10 PM
Friday and Saturday10 AM to midnight

The live "Open now" badge on our home page shows whether we're open right this minute, in St. Albert (Mountain) time. Holiday hours can change around Christmas, New Year's and long weekends, so it's worth checking our Google listing before you head out on a statutory holiday.

How late can a liquor store be open in Alberta?

A lot of people assume there's one closing time for every store in the province. There isn't. Under the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission's (AGLC) policy for retail liquor stores, a store may set its hours anywhere between 9 AM and 2 AM, seven days a week, and stores are allowed to keep shorter hours than that. You can read the policy in the AGLC Retail Liquor Store Handbook.

So "open late" means something different from store to store. Some close at 9 or 10, a few stay open later. At City Liquor, that's 10 PM through the week and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The same handbook has one quirk worth knowing. On the nights the clocks change for daylight saving time, liquor sales have to stop before the clocks are adjusted and can't restart until the next business day. It rarely matters for a midnight close, but it's why you might see a store close unusually early on one particular weekend somewhere in Alberta.

Finding a liquor store open late in St. Albert, on St Albert Trail

St Albert Trail is the main north–south road through the city, so most people pass us without a detour. We're in the Inglewood area, a short drive from:

  • Lacombe Park and Braeside, just across the Trail
  • St. Albert Centre and Downtown, a few minutes south
  • Oakmont, Erin Ridge and Jensen Lakes, up on the north end
  • Mission, Deer Ridge and Woodlands, a quick hop east

If you're coming up from north Edmonton, St Albert Trail carries you straight into the city. And for folks in Sturgeon County heading home through St. Albert, we're right on the way. Parking is free and right at the door, so a late stop really is in and out.

What people pick up on a late run

Late-night trips tend to fall into a few patterns, and knowing yours saves time in the aisles:

  • Cold beer for tonight. Our coolers hold singles, six-packs and cases, from domestic lagers and imports to Alberta craft. If it needs to be cold the moment you get home, go straight to the cooler wall. Our beer store page has more on what we carry.
  • A bottle of wine for an unplanned visit. Chilled sparkling is handy when someone shows up with good news. For a dinner that's already on the table, a medium-bodied red or a crisp white is the safest bet. See the wine store page.
  • Topping up the home bar. Vodka, gin, rum, whisky and tequila cover nearly every simple mixed drink. Our spirits page has the basics.
  • Coolers, seltzers and ciders for the people who'd rather not have beer or wine.

Not sure what you want? Tell our staff what you usually like or what the occasion is, and we're happy to help you find something.

A few late-night rules worth remembering

A late run is still a liquor run, and Alberta's rules don't relax after dark. The short version:

  1. Bring ID. The legal age in Alberta is 18, and stores have to ask anyone who looks under 25 for valid government-issued photo ID. Expect to be asked, and have it ready.
  2. Keep it closed in the car. Alberta's liquor regulation says alcohol you're carrying in a vehicle has to be in a closed container and not within easy reach of anyone in the car. The trunk is your friend.
  3. No drinking in the parking lot. Drinking in public places, parking lots included, isn't allowed in Alberta outside a few specific exceptions.
  4. Plan your ride. If anyone in your group has already been drinking, they shouldn't be the one driving to the store, or home again afterwards.

We cover all of this in more detail, with links to the official sources, in our guide to Alberta liquor laws.

Can't make it before closing?

If the clock beats you, City Liquor is also on SkipTheDishes. You still have to be 18 or older, and the driver will check your photo ID at the door. Our guide to liquor delivery in St. Albert explains how it works. Otherwise, the simplest fix is planning ahead: Friday and Saturday give you until midnight, and every other night until 10.

Late-night shopping checklist

Before you grab your keys:

  • Check the time. Is it Friday or Saturday (midnight close), or another night (10 PM)?
  • Know roughly how many people you're buying for. Our party and wedding quantity guide has easy per-guest numbers.
  • Bring valid photo ID.
  • Make sure the driver hasn't been drinking.
  • Keep a spot in the trunk for the bags.
  • Grab some non-alcoholic options for guests who aren't drinking.
